Biodynamic Beekeeping Info

Biodynamics is a way of working harmoniously with Nature and the planetary influences that honors all life.  It was a sustainable way of life for the Indigenous People's around the planet for thousands of years.  To get a better feel for it, watch the movie called "The Biggest Little Farm".  It shows that when done well, all life is abundant when honored for it's specific gifts and integrated into the whole of the farm.

So in line with that thought, biodynamic beekeeping aligns with how honeybees live in trees naturally.  Such concepts to consider would be:

1.  Insulated hives - mimicking how bees live inside a tree trunk.

2.  Caring for bees that aligns with the Cosmic Rhythms.

Eg. There are certain days conducive to opening hives and inspecting calm bees.

3.  Allowing honeybees to build their own comb as much as possible.

4.  Hive designs that allow roundness of comb construction.

5.  Allowing the honeybees to swarm every second year to regenerate and control diseases. Even Dr. Mark Winston, a bee researcher of over 30 years at Simon Fraser University in BC, suggested these ideas of how we could work with honeybees more in harmony with their natural impulses: "Manifesto"

6.  Feeding honey instead of sugar or protein substitutes.

7.  Using an "Ash" technique to control pests (varroa and small hive beetle) in the hive.

Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary

Gunther Hauk has been a biodynamic beekeeper for over 45 years.  Along with his wife, Vivian, and Alex Tuchman they offer many levels of courses on biodynamic beekeeping at www.spikenardfarm.org.  You can take these courses in person (highly recommended) or on zoom.  It is worth the effort to see what can be done naturally with honeybees gently.

Alex Tuchman has also just published a book on biodynamic beekeeping.  Fabulous and easy to read!
